Automobile Cleaning Business Matters

Do you like cars? Imagine, if you had a car detailing (car valetting) service, you would get a chance to be around cars all the time. And not merely any old automobiles either. People with scruffy old cars tend not to spend money on having them cleaned, so what you would typically be dealing with would be the latest models, top of the range and classic or even vintage cars. Does that sound more attractive now?

Cleaning cars for a living is not a particularly strenuous job, but you do have to have an eye for detail. You will get to know the different models and how and where to clean them, but you will probably have to learn those details as you develop.

Or you could go and work for someone else for six months in order to get some experience and save some cash to invest into your own business once you are ready to open one.

Experience and some savings will certainly go a long way in helping to persuade a bank manager to lend you some start up capital, if yo are a bit short of ready money. It is worth giving this aspect some deep consideration before you rush out and buy a rechargeable autovac.

So, let us take for granted that you have some money saved and that you have worked for a professional car detailing company for a while and that you have noted down the names of the best equipment and that you have studied how to use it.

The next step is to choose whether you are going to valet the cars where the owner of the car wants you to do it - ie at his home or outside his office or are you going to make him bring the car to you or will you collect and return it?

If you have a lot to clean cars on, all well and good; if you are going to collect and return the vehicles, you will probably need help; and if you valet the car off-site, then you will need a van kitted out with everything you need to do a good job.

If you have to borrow money, why not go to friends and family for a loan or a partnership before going to the bank? Someone might give you a loan, if you give their kid a position. That could work out quite well.

If you have to go to a bank, seek advice on how to put your proposal in a way that will show the bank manager that you have studied every aspect of the auto valetting trade and that you mean business.

The final step is procuring customers. This need not be such a stumbling block. You can offer to valet the cars of your friends and family cheaply if they make some sort of effort to advertise your business to their friends and work mates. You can also placed a small ad in the local paper with a coupon code giving 10-20% off if used before so-and-so date.

How To Clean Windows And Other Glass

There is something very gratifying about having cleaned dirty glass. Glass is most frequently used as a window onto the world. The glass is a lens and as such ought to be clean.

Everyone who wears glasses will understand this principal. Dirty spectacles are annoying and have to be cleaned instantly. This is also the case for a car’s windscreen.

However, glass has some other uses besides being a lens. Glass is used to allow natural light to enter; stained glass is used to paint a picture; toughened glass is used for table tops and glass is used to make ornaments and drinking vessels.

The thing is though that because glass always has some type of interaction with light, we like to see it clean and it annoys us when we see dirty glass. Dirty glass is a sign of neglect, a sad sign that no-one cares about it.

So, a pertinent question is: how do you clean glass? We probably all think that we know the answer to this question and we almost certainly all can and do clean glass, but which are the best ways to clean glass?

There are dozens of spays and chemical solutions on the market and you almost certainly have your specific favourite under the sink right now, but there are also traditional mixes that can be manufactured from ingredients found in most well-stocked kitchens.

However, before getting on to the liquid to use, we will talk about the equipment for applying the cleaner. We will talk about windows as they are by far the biggest glass objects that most people have to clean.

Mix your solution in a bucket and then transfer it to a spray bottle, if you like. One note on safety here: never take a bucket up a ladder, it can tip you over. Some people prefer to spray the liquid cleaner on and then scrape it off with a squeegee - a rubber blade like a car’s windshield wipers, others have a preference for more traditional techniques.

Before the squeegee, all professional window cleaners, myself included, used a square of scrim, which is like sacking. I used a square of scrim which was approximately 18 inches square, but the size you use should make a comfortable ball in your hand. I used this to rub on the solution, and I used a large cotton rag to wipe it off. This is an excellent combination which creates excellent results.

Other people swear by newspaper, but I have never seen a professional doing his rounds with a bundle of newspapers. Having said that, my wife and our neighbours all use newspapers to clean the windows and the results are equally as decent.

There are certain weather conditions that you ought to avoid when planning cleaning windows and they are rain and hot, direct sunlight. You can still clean windows in the rain, after all you will still be removing the grime, but people do not like it. They seem to think that you have ‘got away with something’, somehow done less of a job and to be honest, it is harder to tell, if you have done a good job and drying off is well-nigh impossible.

In hot direct sunlight, the liquid will dry off too rapidly, so in effect you are just moving the dirt around and hoping that most of it will stick to the scrim. Therefore, the morning and the evening are the best times to clean glass.

We used to use a dash of plain washing up liquid and a cup of methylated spirits in a bucket of water to clean windows and it worked a treat for all the windows or two or three houses before it needed changing, but other people have different suggestions, some of which I have listed below.

Vinegar and water mixed at a ratio of 4:1 and applied with newspaper. Dry off with newspaper too.

Ammonia, washing-up liquid and water applied with newspaper (wear rubber gloves).

Equal parts of methylated spirits, paraffin oil and water applied and dried off with cloths.

What Is The Low Down On Bed Bugs?

Most people under seventy years of age in the West will not have seen bed bugs. This is mainly due to enhanced living conditions, DDT and better public education. The DDT was used in the thirties and forties and eradicated the problem in the more wealthy countries.

Bed bugs are a part of the arachnid or spider family, although bed bugs are parasites that suck blood, not all bodily fluids. They will feed on most warm-blooded animals and there is some proof that humans are not their first choice of prey.

The most common form of bed bugs are known as Cimex lectularius by their Latin name. They are quite small but very fast moving insects and they are members of the spider family, although many of them do not look like spiders at all. Rather, most of them look like little beetles, until they have satiated themselves, after which they can hardly move and are at their most vulnerable.

Bed bugs feed in a similar way to mosquitoes. They insert a tube into the skin of its prey and suck blood out. It is not a great deal to you, about a quarter of a millilitre, but is a lot to them. It allows them to live and procreate.

Bed bugs, unlike their relatives the ticks, are not known to convey any diseases. In fact, they are one of the few insects that do not transmit a disease.

A bedbug bite is comparable to an ant bite in appearance, but it will itch like a mosquito bite. You will most likely experience a slight swelling with a red dot in the centre and an itch. Little more.

You can check for bed bugs quite easily by soaking a bar of soap in a little water for half an hour while you lie on your bed reading a book. Then get up and fetch the soap, wet-side down and fling back the bed clothes. Dab up the bed bugs, if there are any with the soft soap. This is a fast way of getting rid of a small number of bed bugs, but cannot be considered as a solution.

With regards to the eradication of an infestation of bed bugs, it depends where you are. If you are in a hotel, the bar of soap will be evidence enough of a problem and it is the hotel manager’s duty to provide a solution. If they do nothing, report the hotel to the local tourist bureau.

If you live in rented accommodation, it is your landlord’s responsibility to solve the predicament. If he or she is disinclined, then go to the council hall and seek advice.

If the problem is in your own house, then take the skirting boards and architraves off. Spray or paint very powerful insecticide onto the wall and refit the woodwork. If you are still worried, seal the woodwork off on all sides with mastic or silicone.

These measures will ensure that your house will be free of bed bugs.

Buddhism And The Main Buddhist Sects

Following Buddha’s death in 483 BC, his closest followers (his disciple monks) took time off their preaching to compile his sermons (sutras) and his regulations (vinayas). In the old convention of Buddha, monks initially walked the countryside preaching and teaching for nine months of the year and went to sit out the monsoon period in a retreat for three months.

These retreats became monasteries and temples. This withdrawal into monasteries was important in the development of various interpretations of Buddha’s doctrines and in due course led to the establishment of different sects which acquired popularity in different regions of Asia.

There are three foremost Buddhist sects: Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana or Tantric Buddism.

Theravada Buddhism is the principal sect in Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand and is the sect that stays most faithful to Buddha’s original teachings. Theravada Buddhism teaches that the path to the attainment of personal Nirvana is the aim of life. It is a very individualistic religion in that everybody is alone on their own path to enlightenment.

Mahayana Buddism grew into the largest sect and spread along the Silk Road from India through China to east Asia starting in about 200 BC. Mahayana Buddhists worship Buddha and the Buddhist saints (bodhisattvas - literally ‘wisdom beings’).

Bodhisattvas are beings that restrain themselves from attaining Nirvana (and therefore leaving the wheel of life or cycle of birth, death and reincarnation) so that they may help others achieve Nirvana, which is a major difference between it and Theravada Buddhism.

Mahayana Buddhism is more easily absorbed by different cultures than the other kinds which accounts for it having spread so far. The Buddhist emperor Ashoka (272-232 BC) gave Mahayana a huge boost in popularity by despatching missionaries to Sri Lanka, south-east Asia and China from where it was carried to Korea and Japan in the Sixth Century anno domini.

Zen Buddhism grew in popularity in Japan and China in the Seventh Century. Zen Buddhism is a variant of Mahayana Buddhism and teaches that Nirvana can be achieved through mental conditioning and meditation.

Vajrayana or Tantric Buddhism grew in the Seventh Century too and is most common in Tibet and Mongolia. Vajrayana Buddhism tries to identify the initiate with a visualized deity. Tantric cannon includes esoteric writings, teaching that meditation can engage the mind by the use of mantras (chants), mudras (hand gestures) and mandalas (visible icons). The Dalai Lama is the spiritual and temporal leader of Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhists.

Buddhism reached its height of popularity in China during the T’ang dynasty in the Ninth Century, when it was partially suppressed by royal command. Likewise Zen attained its height of popularity in the Nineteen Century when the Japanese royal family switched to Shintoism taking many of the royal hangers-on with it. Buddhism declined in India as well in the Eighth Century because lots of its concepts were absorbed into Hinduism. Buddism was to all intents and purposes extinct in India by the Thirteenth Century.

Learning History At Home Schooling

Do you think that spending time in traditional classrooms is not worth it? For some people, that is true. For instance, a test is due and the pupils are told to memorize a list of dates and names. However, after taking the test, they will probably forget 90% of those dates and names. That’s what most students do when they have exams. If you are one of these people, you will find traditional history lessons boring, so home schooling, which focuses more on the history of the world will probably catch your fancy.

Simple memorization by rote is just not enough to know the significance of historically famous people and fateful events. However, through home schooling in history, you can study the different cultures of the past in a unique, but interesting way - that is your own way! By the study of history, you will also understand the situation of the world today.

But, if you consider that home schooling is the best method for your child’s learning, you must also be prepared to undertake some responsibilities. As there will be no teacher physically present, you will have to oversee your child’s learning progress by yourself.

Let’s say your child is interested in a particular sport. You could combine history and home schooling by simply hanging a map on the wall of your child’s bedroom and mark the location of his favourite sports team. Make sure that you track all the team’s games, scores, activities and schedules. Then, you could go back to history lessons by reading biographies of the various athletes, who had been popular in the particular sport that your child enjoys. Apart from that, you can also examine the history of that particular sport and discover where it originated, its inventor, and the other things happening in that particular time in history.

For instance, if your child likes baseball, you can teach your child about the history of Negro Leagues, government hearings on the use of steroids, and other favourite pastimes during that time. But remember that you can apply this concept to any interest such as dances and inventions. You can also have conversations with your child concerning current events or read interesting historical works and other books. Aside from that, you can also watch documentaries together with the rest of the family. There are various resources that you can use in home schooling, such as TV, maps, books, a globe, an atlas, and encyclopedias. Due of the exciting adventures that you and your child will read about and see on film, your child will find it easier to remember the names and dates of the history lessons. After all, education is better when it is done in an interesting way.

These methods are recommended for when the child is still young, but once your child is older, you must choose an appropriate home schooling program that is suitable for his/her age group. The programs are available at the elementary, high school, and even college levels. You simply have to search online for these various programs. A good thing about these programs is that you can tailor them to fit the interests of your child. However, you must ensure that all the lessons are followed by your child.

After you and your child decide to try home schooling, you will have to be prepared to make some changes in your life. The educational environment will now be in your home not at a school and through the various resources that you think best, such as a computer and the Internet.

Home Theater Screens

When it comes to choosing a screen, the first thing to think about is the type of screen you want or even may need. If the room where you are going to set up your home theater is large, then you will have to have a home theater projection screen or maybe you just want one anyway.

Personally, I like the idea of having a drop-down screen, but sometimes you have to have one anyway even in a modest-sized home movie theater. It would convert your living room into a home movie theater at the click of a remote. Imagine: you lie back in your chair; click the remote and the screen drops down; click another time and the lights dim; click another again and the film begins!

However, if you prefer a television screen, then you might be considering buying a new one. They say that a 27 inch screen is big enough, but I do not think it is. I think you need 48-60 inches, but then I’m a baby-boomer and my eyes are definitely not what they were.

If you are purchasing a new TV for your home movie theater set-up, I think you should get the best you can afford. HDTV is already here and since February 2009 the United States has been committed to High Definition. Therefore, I would ensure that your new TV is able to receive it. Then I recommend that your new home movie theater screen be a flat one in order to reduce the annoying glare that could ruin your experience, which could be another reason for choosing a drop-down projection screen.

Finally, you should make sure that the new television has enough input and output sockets for the peripheral equipment you plan to use and you’re done. So, to summarize, I recommend you go for:

More than a 27 inch screen

A flat screen

HDTV enabled

Sufficient input and output sockets

Satellite enabled

I recommend satellite compatibility because it is probably the future or near future at least. If you get a satellite TV connection you will have access to HDTV downloads which you can watch whenever you like.

100 Year Old Marklin Toy Trains - One Of The First

There are individuals who collect toy trains or model trains as some may call them. As you can imagine most of them are men and lots of people would say that they are in still in touch with their childhood.

This is not to say that they are childish, it is not a criticism. Some collectors display their collection at fayres, while others are content with displaying them off to friends at home.

However one trait that they all share is enthusiasm. Collectors of train sets tend to be very enthusiastic about their hobby, often dedicating a whole room or more to their trains. One of the timeless trains that no collector would not want in his collection is a Marklin, which were first made in 1891. Veteran Marklin trains are right up there on a collectors wish list.

Marklin was the first maker of toy trains that produced standard gauges, but a number of different models of trains and corresponding accessories. This really started the hobby of collecting toy trains, because you could buy a train and some track and later buy more track and a carriage of a different train and run it on the same track. This strategy also had the effect of allowing less well off families to buy a train set for little Arthur.

Marklin train sets are really a part of history, but they are beautiful too. And rare. It is normal to pay thousands of dollars for a single item. A complete Marklin station including a rare Marklin 2609 was sold at auction in America for $110,000. The station was exquisite and the train and its carriages had been hand painted, but it is still a immense amount of money for a train set.

The original estimation for this train set and station was about $30,000, which was considered right because it was virtually unique. A European and an American collector battled at the auction to the finish with the American winning in the end. The station and the carriages had tables with people sitting at them reading the paper and drinking tea or coffee.

However, that was by no means the only Marklin that went for more than was expected. There was a gauge III Marklin 2609 in the auction as well and that went for $82,500. It was a beautiful, hand-painted steam engine in exquisite detail. The original price set for this piece was $25,000. Several other Marklin pieces were sold at the auction and none of them sold for less than $25,000.

So a Marklin train set is definitely something to look out for next time you go to a car boot sale or a church bazaar. However at a 120 years old, you are probably not going to find a Marklin train set or even a solitary locomotive, but jolly good luck luck in your search.

Marketing To The Masses

If you were to create a self-cleaning fabric, the world may want to beat a path to your door to acquire some from you, but first of all they will have to know that the fabric exists, that it is available for purchase, and they have to know where your door is. This requires advertising.

There are two classifications of advertising: institutional and product. Institutional advertising promotes the name of your business in general and product advertising markets a product or range of products or services. The sort of publicity that a company requires, depends on the products or services that it allows.

Moreover, some kinds of advertising lend themselves better to institutional advertising rather than product advertising. For example, a shop sign, a sign-written van or a promotional calendar are better suited to institutional advertising, while a newspaper or magazine advert would be better for advertising the latest special offer.

There are few facts and figures available that bring to light the extraordinary growth of the mass consumption society as well as those dealing with the expansion of the advertising industry. For instance, before the Second World War, US average annual expenditure on advertising per year had been about $2 billion for decades.

In 1950, as the post-war economy began to recover , American businesses spent $5.7 billion to advertise its goods and services. By 1960, that amount had doubled to $12 billion. By 1970, American business was spending $20.

Between 1970 and 1990, as the children Baby Boomers became adults and started earning and spending, advertising expenditure went through the roof, so that by 1986, it had reached $100 billion.

That phenomenal rate of increase could not be sustained, but by 1999, total expenditure on all forms of advertising exceeded $215 billion . The latest available figures are for 2007 and they stand at $280 billion.

In 1999, nearly 60% of all advertising dollars were spent on adverts in newspapers, magazines, on the radio and on television. By 2007, that figure had fallen to about 54% as the Internet started to have an effect on advertising trends. These trends are expected to continue as every firm is expected to have its own website these days.

The nation’s largest advertisers are the manufacturers of cars, food, soft drinks, tobacco and beer and they filter most of their expenditure through about 13,000 advertising agencies., who normally make the ads and buy the space or air time from the media too.

These agencies have been transformed over the last decade by mergers. The most lucrative advertising agencies these days are huge international concerns. WPP, the largest advertising agency in the world, billed $37 billion in 2008 and had this to say about itself:

“Our total revenue in 2008 surpassed that of all our competitors, regaining the No.1 worldwide position for the third time”.

Ladies Golf Apparel and Fashion

I was perusing one of those ‘Golfing for Women’ magazines the other day and began wondering where the women live, who wear the golf attire modeled in women’s golf magazines? I’ve never seen women, not even the professionals, who would dress in such expensive and outrageous clothes.

It’s so simple to spend tons of money kitting yourself out for the sport of golf. Think about hats, sunglasses, gloves, shirts, shorts, socks, windsheeters and shoes, and it is obvious that the costs add up very quickly, even if you do your shopping at cheap online sales. Then you have to factor in the cost of clubs, balls, bag, cart and fees and you have to play a round of golf really quite frequently to keep the “CPU” (cost per use) down to a tolerable level.

One glossy advert showed a beautiful model in really short shorts (like that’s allowed on courses!) that cost nearly $300, a golf shirt at almost $600, a jacket by Ralph Lauren at almost $200 and two-toned Utuser shoes costing $400 plus.

That comes to nearly $1,500! I know that I could never hope to get the CPU on that outfit down to anywhere near an acceptable limit in my golfing lifetime! Don’t misunderstand me - I love clothes and I really love shoes, but could never afford, nor even want, golf shoes or pants that cost as much as a lot of people’s weekly wages.

OK, you need comfortable golf shoes that don’t look like something your grandmother would have worn, but you can easily find less expensive and still fashionable shoes.

I have bought a couple of very trendy golfing outfits, even though none of them are famous brand names. If I were to total up the cost of all of those articles of clothing, it would not add up to the cost of a Tse golf shirt. Personally, I would prefer to have a few stylish outfits than one that is priced way too much.

If I were to wear a $1,500 set of golfing attire to play golf in, I would just be too worried about getting it dirty or perspiring in it to enjoy a decent game of golf.

Some Tips On Quitting Smoking

If you are a smoker, then the overwhelming odds are that you have tried to give up smoking, even if you never told anyone that you were trying to give up. The old joke among smokers is that they have given up giving up.

That is a real pity and a very sad joke. Most smokers started while they were young and impressionable, but it takes a great deal of willpower to give up for life.

If you are attempting to stop smoking, then I hope that some of the tips set out below will be of use to you in your task to kick the habit. The truth is that it takes most people years to certainly give up smoking, although there are lots of people who give up one day and never smoke again - ever.

It really depends on the type of person you are really. Some people can cut down gradually and others know that if they are going to quit, then they have to make a clean break once and for all.

It is simple to judge progress with the person who stops from one day to the next, but a lot harder to do the same with someone who cuts down. For example, how long is someone going to take to reduce from one packet a day to two?

How does a partner know when someone is smoking ten cigarettes an evening, that they have not already smoked thirty during the day? It is a big problem.

In the end, the quitter is alone and if he or she wants to tell lies concerning their progress, they can. No-one else will know, but at the end of the day, they are merely telling lies and trying to fool themselves that they are trying to give up smoking. Having said that, a smoker must reward himself for each step of real progress.

A good tip is not to rely on just one strategy to give up. For example, you could wear a patch and reduce your intake by five or ten real cigarettes each week. Try nicotine gum at the same time.

Always tell people that you are giving up and never take a cigarette off anyone and never offer anyone one either. Do not get into ’rounds’ or ‘flashes’ of offering cigarettes.

If you find that you smoke more whilst you are in a stressful situation, such as at the time to submit the end of year accounts, hold off attempting to quit until after then. One of the times that most smokers have a big problem cutting down is while they are in the pub drinking alcohol with their friends. This is almost certainly the hardest time to conquer the habit.

Many people like a cigarette with a drink after finishing work and if you fit into this category, endeavor to go home from work for a drink or give up smoking with a friend and take it in turns to go to their house and yours for a drink after work. Once the first three months are up, you could go back to the pub and see how you get on or you simply may not want to anymore.
